Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
