Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the ability to contest specific decisions from the official, following the system already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move comes just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
