Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
